Benefits of Grape Seed Oil

Like a lot of other cosmetic ingredients, rapeseed oil is a byproduct, specifically in the wine industry. But you should not discounted, as there are a huge array of health benefits from grapeseed oil.

It’s various beneficial properties have made it a popular product in both the food and the cosmetic space.  

‘Grape seed oil is rich in phenolic compounds, fatty acids, and vitamins and has a shelf life of six months once it’s opened. [1]

As mentioned, grapeseed oil is a byproduct of one of the biggest and oldest industries in the world.  ‘Grapes are one of the most consumed fruits in the world, mostly in the form of juice and wine. Over 1000 species of red and white grapes are extensively cultivated around the world’ [3]

If seeds for grapes were not used to make grapeseed oil, they would simply be discarded.  Like man other oils we use for our skin, grapeseed oil helps to reduce waste.  

Grapeseed oil is made via one of two processes. The first involves the use of chemical solvent to extract the maximum yield from the grapes seeds. Unlike almond (50%) or Jojoba (50%), the oil produced by an individual grapeseed is meager ,being only 8-20%, thus the chemical solvent method is the predominant method used globally. [4]

Screw pressing or cold pressing oil is done with seeds being pressed between two steel plates. This method removes the chemical solvent from the process, leaving the natural flavour, odour and natural benefits intact. For these reasons it is believed that this method yields a higher quality oil as a result.

Benefits of grape seed Oil

Grapessed oil has a long list of purported benefits. From helping to tighten skin to disease prevention. Considering grapeseed oil is packed with Vitamin E, Linoleic Acid and phytosterols, there a lot to go though when it comes to it’s benefits. Let’s dive in and see what we can find out.


The first pro to note about grape seed oil is it’s light texture. By not being a heavy oil, it’s much less greasy when used in topical products like beard oil or moisturiser.  This is a big plus for anyone who doesn’t want to be left with any greasy film from their products. 


Grapeseed oil is Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is an all too common health problem.  It’s our bodies natural protection response and can be triggered by anything from physical injury, like a splinter, to a germ. 

This natural response is a healthy thing but over a prolonged period of time, constant inflammation can lead to numerous health problems, including heart disease, arthritis, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. 

So, it goes without saying, we want to reduce inflammation. The good news, grapeseed has been shown to be very effective at reducing inflammation. 


The micronutrients( known as  polyphenols) that are  in grape seed oil are able to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators within the body. This allows our body to recovery from inflammation more quickly than it normally would without gapeseed oil. 

Both hydrophilic ( molecule attracted to water) and lipophilic ( How well chemical compounds can dissolve in fats, oil and  lipids) components of grape seed oil contribute to recovery from the inflammation processes that occur during many chronic diseases.’ [5]

Prolonged Inflammation is start of developing acne.

When it comes to skin, ongoing research has shown that acne, starts with inflammation. 

 ‘New research shows that the entire acne process starts when systemic inflammation (inflammation at the cellular level) causes normal levels of sebum in hair follicles to “oxidize”. This means that inflammation damages the sebum and causes the oxygen content of the sebum to lower.’ [6]

Helps to Fight off free radicals


Grapeseed oil has high vitamin e content.  Vitamin E’s primary function is as an antioxidant [7], meaning it protects cells from damage from both free radicals and the immune system. This is perfect for skin, as we want to reduce damage to it as much as possible.

Grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid content ( Sometimes referred to as vitamin ‘F’), which works to help keep our skin plump, while also fortifying the skin’s barrier against causes of free radicals like pollution and smog. This further adds to grapes seed oils capacity to reduce signs of premature ageing. 

Not only does linoleic acid improve skin health in general, it also strengthens cell membranes and shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This is related to the suitability of grape seed oil use for acne problems.’ [8]

This further adds to grapeseed adding in the fight against acne. On top of this, in both human and animal trials, it has been found that ‘ grape seed oil shows wound-healing activity and diminishes scars’ 

This is unsurprising given it’s previous two properties of  antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

The downsides of Grapeseed oil

Given it’s many benefits, it may be surprising to find that grapeseed oil dose have some flaws.

One of the most obvious is that anyone allergic to grapes should avoid it at all costs.

The second is it’s extremely short shelf life.  Compared to other oils, rapeseed has a limited shelf life of only 3-6 months. This is primarily due to the high linoleic acid found in grapeseed oil. It will destabilize and lose it’s benefits within this timeframe, meaning any products using rapeseed oil as it’s primary base, will have a short shelf life.  

The good news is that this can be offset by formulas that contain more stable oils, like jojoba or almond oil, blended with grapeseed oil to give you the best of both worlds.  

How to use grapeseed Oil

When you’re trying out a new substance for the first time and you’re unsure if you’re allergic or not, it’s best to test it first. 

The best way to test if you are allergic or not by applying a very small amount, 1-3 drops of jojoba oil to your forearm. 

Leave it covered for 8-12 hours and if you have no irritation, bumps or redness, you should be in the clear

Grapeseed oil has huge benefits for skin health.

Grapeseed oil is at it’s most beneficial when directly applied to your skin. With it’s many noted benefits for skin, it’s ideal in products such a serum, moisturisers and moisturising body washes.

We use grapeseed oil in many of our products, including our products for hair. This is because we want to look after the skin underneath the hair, so it can produce strong and healthy hair.  


We have ancient oil that has been used by civilization for thousands of years in a multitude of ways, that delivers a huge list of benefits from wound healing to reducing signs of ageing. 

Outside of it’s short shelf life, grapeseed oils benefits are hard to deny.
